Every Month, New International Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarships each month for international students 36 international students will receive US $48,000 from MPOWER this year to help them pursue their academic goals. How it functions The scholarship theme for the month will be announced on the page linked below on the first of each month. Apply as soon as possible! The final Friday of the month will be the closing date for applications.

The Tide Turning Scholarship 

Foundation for Andrew W. Mellon

Description 

One of Stellenbosch University's ten faculties, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees in the humanities and social sciences, as well as programs in African languages, English, general linguistics, ancient studies, music, drama, and visual arts (Geography and Environmental Studies; History; Information Science; Journalism; Philosophy; Political Science; Psychology; Social Work; and Sociology and Social Anthropology). The Avalon Foundation and the Old Dominion Foundation were combined to create the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 1969. The Foundation is the largest funder of the arts and humanities in the USA and is a not-for-profit organization.

Higher Learning, Arts and Culture, Public Knowledge, and Humanities in Place are the Foundation's four core program areas. A small number of full-time scholarships for Master's (100% research) or PhD studies are available, thanks to a collaboration between the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University. All of the fields that make up our Faculty provide scholarships, but this particular scholarship funding is only available for a research topic that fits into one of the following categories: The Anthropocene and Ecocritical Studies; African Cultural Studies • Studies of identity, gender, and/or queerness

Extra criteria 

Eligibility requirements 
• Candidates must have received at least a 75% on their previous degree. 
• As part of their application, applicants are required to submit a sample of their writing: master's thesis for PhD candidates research paper for honors students seeking an MA Any scholarly writings that have been published that relate to your application 
• In addition to this scholarship application, candidates must also apply to study at Stellenbosch University. Candidates must not be older than 30 at the time of application for a Master's scholarship and not older than 35 for a PhD scholarship. No supervision or registration is necessary for applicants.

However, before submitting an application, they should acquaint themselves as to whether there are any acceptable supervisors in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences for their specific topic of research. Recommendations include having a track record of publications, winning prizes or grants, having relevant professional experience, and having the capacity to use languages other than English for academic reasons. 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE AND REQUIREMENTS 

• Official application form 
• A motivation letter (no more than 600 words);
 • A preliminary research proposal (no more than 1,000 words), outlining the problem statement, the methodology, theoretical framework, and philosophical underpinnings you intend to use, as well as the feasibility of your study;
• A certified copy of your South African ID or passport;
 • A certified copy of your Honours or MA degree certificate, or foreign equivalent (if you have completed the qualification but have not yet obtained the certificate, official proof from the institution concerned that the degree will be delivered); (for international students).

According to the request made for these funds during the study period, the PhD scholarship may also cover research activities you conduct with your supervisor, such as a writing retreat, conference attendance, and publication costs up to the amount of R52 500, in addition to study fees and an allowance. The Masters scholarship may also cover research activities you conduct with your supervisor, such as a writing retreat, conference attendance, and publication costs up to R20 375, depending on your request for these funds during the study period. This is in addition to your tuition and allowance.
